Review : January GlossyBox

Review : January GlossyBox
I finally received the January GlossyBox. This box was a lot later than usual due to the fact that it is a special box for Valentine’s Day. These themed boxes do excite me, but, was it worth the wait?
Pink valentine's themed GlossyBox with GlossyBox sweet candy

January Valentine's Day themed GlossyBox
I love the hot pink box, the little pink sticker and the sweet, such lovely little touches.

The products…
Eyeko eyeliner box and product side by side
Eyeko London eyeliner in Plum product and swatches
Eyeko Skinny Eyeliner in Plum 0.8g (full size) £9.50
GlossyBox say : Get a handle on your eyeliner for precise definition and intense colour with a long-lasting finish.
I say : I was pleased to see an Eyeko product in my box. I’ve had products from Eyeko previously and really liked them, they have recently re-branded and I haven’t tried anything since. I was initially a little disappointed to see the colour Plum, I received a plum eyeliner in a mystery gift from ELF and will barely use that, now I have two plum eyeliners. However, I do quite like this. The colour has a kind of bronze-y / brown-y sheen to it which makes it more wearable.
They have given us a code for a free gift with any purchase.
Orly nail varnish in ruby
Orly Nail Lacquer in Ruby 5.3ml approx £2.05
GlossyBox say : Orly, the top Californian brand, offers an infinite range of colours.
I say : I haven’t tried this out yet. I have plenty of red nail varnishes so wasn’t amazed to see this. I did expect a red nail varnish as it is the Valentine’s Day box. I’ve never tried anything by Orly so am looking forward to giving it a go.
weleda one step cleanser & toner product and box side by side
Weleda One Step Cleanser & Toner 10ml approx £1
GlossyBox say : Weleda One-Step cleanser & toner is a handy two in one pack ideal for travel.
I say : I really don’t like receiving facial cleansers in these boxes. The sizes of the samples are never big enough to get a real feel for the product. My skin always reacts badly to new products, by the time I get over the initial reaction I will have finished this sample. I really do think that if facial cleansers are going to be included they should provide a decent size so that you can get a real feel for it and decide whether to buy it or not.
They have given us £5 plus free P&P off our next order of over £15.
Bottle of FAB Gentle Body Wash
FAB Gentle Body wash 56.7g approx £3.25
GlossyBox say : A moisturising, irritant-free everyday cleanser ideal for even the most sensitive skin.
I say : I’m always happy to receive a body wash in these boxes as it is something that I know I’ll use. I have terrible dry skin on my legs which do tend to itch after showering. I’ll be interested to see if this stops that problem. This smells quite pleasant and I like the packaging. It will have to be amazing to convince me to part with £13 to repurchase a body wash.
sample of Murad skin perfecting primer packaging and product side by side
murad hybrids skin perfecting primer in dewy finish swatched on skin
Murad Hybrids Skin Perfecting Primer – Dewy Finish 5ml approx £4.84
GlossyBox say : Oil free primer ignites a radiant glow, powered by light enhancing minerals.
I say : I initially thought this was a complete waste when I saw the colour of it, it angered me slightly. Then, thankfully, I rubbed it in and it blended away nicely. Despite my pale skin this is suitable. I’m not usually a lover of the dewy finish as I find it tends to leave my already oily skin looking oilier. I do think that the matte finish would have been a better all rounder to send out in these boxes. I will give this a good go though.
They have given us 33% off the Murad site.
Overall verdict:
  • My rough estimate of the total box price is £20.64, not as much as previous boxes but still double the money.
  • I don’t know what it is, but for me this box just seems to be missing something. When I opened it my first thought was ‘is that it?’.
  • We received one full size item.
I’ve signed up for the Carmine box in February, I will then have to decide between GlossyBox, Boudoir Prive and Carmine. It is going to be difficult! I have been very impressed with what I have seen from Carmine so far and GlossyBox never seem to quite ‘do it’ for me any more. I’m not sure if I can bare to part with it though!

I think the beauty boxes in general are so hit & miss but I would have thought it would be a bit more 'special' for the Valentines box! x

They are very hit and miss. I'm the same as you though, expected something very special for this one, I expected to be wowed x

To be honest with you, I don't like this box, considering its a Valentine's Special, it doesn't do it for me either. I have never bought a beauty box before although I have wanted to, but I'm sceptical as there is no consistency across the boxes. I've bit the bullet and have finally signed up for my first ever box, the February Carmine box, fingers crossed it lives up to my standards! xo

    • 5th February 2012 / 11:32 am

I was really disappointed with it. I think sometimes they hype these 'special' boxes up too much, which often leads to disappointment.
Fingers crossed for the Feb Carmine, I'm looking forward to mine x

I haven't received mine yet and seeing others views on this box, I'm not looking forward to it. I think I'll give Carmine or JolieBox a try 🙂 xxxxxxxxxx

    • 5th February 2012 / 11:34 am

I have JolieBox and am impressed so far. From what I've seen of Carmine I really love the look of it x

  4. 31st January 2012 / 9:59 pm

I've always wanted to try a glossybox, but they've really let themselves down this month so I may become a carmine girl!

    • 5th February 2012 / 11:35 am

Carmine does appear to be winning in the beauty box table lately x

  5. 31st January 2012 / 10:38 pm

i didnt think the primer would work for me either because of the colour, but i was pleasantly suprised!

    • 5th February 2012 / 11:36 am

The primer really annoyed me at first, I was ready to have a full blown rant on here about them sending out wrong colours bla, bla, bla. I was actually very impressed when I rubbed it in x

  6. 2nd February 2012 / 6:53 pm

I have just received and received this month's box, have to say i am quite disappointed that out of 5 products 2 were shower gels!! no nail polish nor Weleda face cleanser for me, adn I got the powder pink Eyeko liner which I know I will never use. The word that actually got out of my mouth when I finished looking at the box was "meh", I was distinctly underwhelmed.

    • 5th February 2012 / 11:38 am

Two shower gels is ridiculous! They should't double up on items like that. It may be worth trying the Beauty Box Swaps facbook page to swap your eyeliner, I think there are a few people who are desperately trying to get the pink one.
I too was very underwhelmed x
