Mermaid & Barney Theme Party

Mermaid & Barney Theme Party
A few weeks back my sister organised a joint birthday party for my niece and nephew. Gracie had turned five and wanted a Mermaid themed party while Olly is turning two and Barney obsessed. Regular readers will probably know that I like to bake and make things, so of course I stepped in to help with the decorations and the cakes.
I didn’t do loads as I didn’t have much time, but I was very pleased with what I did do.
My pride and joy is most definitely Gracie’s number five. I bought the cardboard number five from HobbyCraft, along with some paint, glitter and tissue paper. The other items were hidden gems from my craft box. Gracie loved this and was so pleased when I told her that she could take it home.
Olly’s cardboard number two also came from HobbyCraft. I had no idea what to do for a Barney themed one so just painted it in Barney purple with a green ‘stomach’ similar to Barney’s. I did attempt to paint a face on it but I am useless at that sort of thing, Spencer commented that it looked like a suicidal Barney so I painted over it! Olly did like it though, he is a boy of very little words but he is often heard saying “I love Barney” which is exactly what he said when I showed him this, at least he knew what it was supposed to be, that is good enough for me.
I decided to keep the decorations simple by making pom poms using Barney and Mermaid coloured tissue paper. These were so easy to make, I followed this tutorial.
Last but by no means least I made cupcakes. Plain old cupcakes with food colouring, icing and cake toppers. For Olly’s cakes I added a mixture of blue and red food colouring and then topped with personalised Barney cake toppers. For Gracie’s I added red food colouring and topped with personalised Little Mermaid cake toppers. The cake toppers are so cheap and such an easy way to make a cake that little bit more special. I made a last minute decision to colour the cakes which is why I didn’t just use pink and purple, I had to improvise.
My sister wanted to do something a little different to the standard party bags so decided to do little buckets, the idea being that the yellow sweets at the bottom are the sand. She added chocolate shells to them after I took this photo.
I think it looked great, though I did wish that we had more than half an hour to set-up (that is all the venue allows) so that we could of really gone to town with the decorations.
