Aria’s First Birthday Cake Smash

Aria’s First Birthday Cake Smash

A lot of people disagree with cake smash photo shoots, saying that they are wasteful, buying a cake just to smash up is almost making a mockery of people who can just about afford to get by day to day. I get that, but, I also wanted to capture some special memories for Aria’s first birthday. The cake cost us £10 from Asda, yes, to some people that is a lot of money, but if we didn’t do the cake smash we would have gone out and spent money on some attraction and then spent over £10 on top for cake and coffee while we were there. Plus the cake didn’t get wasted, Spencer and I quite enjoyed sampling it while cleaning the mess up.

I had every intention of doing a DIY cake smash at home, I even went as far as to buy this white wood floor photo backdrop especially for the occasion, I already have this set of photography lighting and stands for blog photos so it was just going to be a case of switching the back drop over. However, when my photographer friend Jenny Healey offered to let me use her photography studio in Pontypool I couldn’t resist. My backdrop was okay but she has a studio full of pretty backgrounds and accessories!

We bought this pink giant cupcake from Asda, it was perfect for the cake smash, it looked pretty and had loads of soft icing that Aria could make a mess of. We picked the small sweets off and left the giant buttons on the top, although we did end up removing these after a while as Aria was happy to sit there and delicatly pick these off instead of getting stuck into smashing up the cake!

The 3D ONE letters were bought from Hobbycraft here, I decorated them using a base and top coat of Modpodge and gold glitter.

For the shoot Aria wore her gorgeous tutu from Angel’s Face* and her personalised first birthday top from FunkyBubbaloo on Etsy.

It took Aria a little while to get into the cake smash, we even had a crying baby at one point, this was soon resolved by giving her a blob of icing. I think she was a little confused that we were allowing her to just sit there and make a complete mess, she seemed to be waiting for us to tell her off. With a lot of encouragement and us helping to smash the cake up for her she soon got into the swing of things and covered pretty much the whole room in jam and icing.

I am so glad that we decided to do a cake smash for Aria, I have captured some gorgeous photos to cherish and to show Aria when she is older. We had so much fun and it was a great way to spend an hour on her first birthday. I will definitely do the same for any future children’s first birthdays.

Loving the photos – we're not doing a cake smash for Isabella's first birthday just because I can't face the mess! I think it's a fun idea and you've got some lovely photos for Aria to look back on 🙂

So adorable!! Well worth the £10 for the cake – never let anyone have a go at you about what you spend your money on! You spend it to make beautiful memories with your girl. To me, that is not a waste and is pretty good value! xx

Gorgeous photos. I had a cake smash for my two year olds first birthday and I loved the photos, although she was a tinker and kept running off so getting the photos was hard xx
