Meet The Welsh Bloggers – Baby Holiday

It’s Monday already which means that I am bringing you another Welsh blogger, this week is the turn of the lovely friend and fellow parenting blogger and chocoholic Alana from Baby Holiday.

a blog series interviewing welsh bloggers - this week is parenting and lifestyle blogger Alana of Baby Holiday

Firstly, tell me a bit about yourself and your blog :

Hiya! I’m Alana – a news editor, chocoholic and mother to two boys, blogging at www.baby-holiday.co.uk. I live in South West Wales with my husband Stew, our sons Santino, aged two, and Ezra, five months, and our beagle Jeremy (Jeremy Beagle – get it?! And yes, she’s a girl … called Jeremy).
I love photography and travelling, and when I’m not annoying my family by making them stop for yet another photo I’m planning our next trip or day out – usually with the aim of getting some specific shots.
My camera is always to hand, and is usually only replaced with a cup of tea or a caramel latte … oh ok, and a slice of cake.
I blog about family life in general, as well as our travels, days out and fashion.

What do you love most about living in Wales?

I’ve been lucky enough to live in a few different places while studying and travelling, from the French Alps and the south of Italy, to Dorset and Wiltshire, but always knew I’d come home to Wales. I’m from a very close-knit family, as is Stew, so I couldn’t imagine Santino and Ezra not being able to see their grandparents, aunties, uncles and cousins regularly (it’s also a huge help with childcare!)
When I got my first journalism job I moved to Wiltshire for two years and found it really strange being so far from the coast. One of the things I love about where we live is being a short distance from so many beautiful beaches and walking along the seafront.

What, if anything, is your least favourite thing about living in Wales?

The worst thing about living in South West Wales is feeling a bit cut off from the rest of the world. I miss out on big bloggers’ events because they tend to take place in London, and even events in Cardiff can be a struggle as they usually mean a late night. Meeting friends means an early start and late drive home, and going on holiday means factoring an extra few hours travel time to the nearest airport. We could do with a few more facilities further west!

What made you decide to start a blog?

I knew nothing about blogging when I decided to start my own site while on maternity leave with Santino, now aged two, as I thought I would need a hobby to keep me busy (ha! how naive). I’m a journalist and news editor by profession so writing comes naturally to me and I couldn’t face the thought of going a year without writing. I had no idea what I was doing as a mother, and wanted to show other parents that it’s ok to wing it the majority of the time. Two years and a second son later and I’m still blogging … and winging it.

What has been the highlight of your blogging career so far?

I’m far too small-fry to be considered for awards and things, and have used my blog more as a way of recording our memories than for opportunities, so I’m always amazed if a company approaches us. Last year we were lucky enough to be chosen as Bluestone Bloggers and spent a week at the resort in Pembrokeshire. We really enjoyed, and had some quality time with my sister-in-law who left the following month to spend 18 months travelling.
When I started blogging I used to read about people who made groups of friends online, and to be honest I thought they were mad. Fastforward two years and I now have some fab friends who I try to meet with regularly and message almost daily … who’d have thought it?!

Who are your favourite Welsh bloggers?

There are so many lovely and talented bloggers in Wales. I especially love reading Laura’s posts at Sidestreet Style … as the name suggests, she blogs a lot about fashion and lifestyle, and she amazes me with her ability to always look so put together and on trend with two young boys. I also love catching up with Cathryn at Cardiff Mummy Says … If there’s something happening in Cardiff, she knows about it!
