We decided to treat ourselves to a new vacuum cleaner with our Christmas money this year, we’ve had the Dyson DC50 Animal Upright vacuum cleaner for around eight years now, and while it is still in perfect working order we decided that we wanted something a little less bulky. We really liked our Dyson Animal vacuum and found that it worked amazingly at, surprise surprise, picking up the cats hair, and mine, I shed a lot of hair! As a result and after a lot of research we decided to stick to the same brand, especially when we found it on offer for less than £250.
The cordless hoover comes with several attachments, all of which can be used as a small, hand held device or attached to the wand making it similar to your standard upright hoover, just a lot lighter. My most used attachments are the small animal attachment which is perfect for hoovering the carpet on the stairs and the long, narrow attachment which is great at reaching under sofas and into corners.
As well as a standard suction speed there is also the option to switch the V6 onto a maximum suction speed for short blasts at a time, the standard has so far worked perfectly fine for me, though it is nice to know that we can push the button for six minutes of higher suction when needed.
Despite only being small I don’t find myself constantly emptying this, in fact I don’t even empty it after every use, more likely after around three. The dirt and hairs are compacted in very tightly. The hoover is easy to empty, at the press of a button the flap comes down and the contents fall out, sometimes they do need a little help to come out as they are compacted in so tightly.
Being cordless the vacuum does only run for a certain length of time before it needs charging. This does mean that you can’t really use this hoover for a top to bottom house clean, we tend to hoover a room at a time or as we go so this works perfectly for us. The battery typically lasts twenty minutes, though if you use one of the motorised attachments or maximum mode it will drain quicker. Once drained it takes 3.5 hours for a full charge.
The vacuum is lightweight which makes hoovering the stairs and even the ceilings a doodle. We tend to use the handheld part a lot, Aria throws her food on the floor so it is so handy just to be able to whip this out, no plugging in or dragging a heavy hoover out. In less than five minutes our floors are clean again. The handheld part will also come in handy if Spencer ever decides to clean his car…
The Dyson V6 comes with a handy storage dock, which can also double up as a charging dock, despite the hoover being small and neat I didn’t want it on display in my living room and don’t really have space anywhere else so we opted to hang it on the back of our under the stairs door, it takes up minimal space and isn’t in the way of anything. This does mean that we can’t charge it when we are storing it but that is fine by me. The storage dock is a standard one across the Dyson V6 range, the animal comes with one additional attachment and annoyingly there isn’t a space in the storage dock for the attachment.
As the V6 is designed as a grab and go hoover the power button does have to be held in constantly when in use, it is sensitive so doesn’t take much effort to hold in but I thought it was worth mentioning.
There is no battery life indicator on the hoover which can sometimes be annoying, I often start hoovering for the battery to run out seconds later, the addition of a battery indicator would be useful.
- Easy to use
- No wires
- Easy and neat to store
- Cleans very well
- Thin long nozzle for hard to reach places
- Battery doesn’t last long
- Constantly have to hold power button in
- Storage is for standard V6 not animal, not enough places to store extra animal attachment
- No battery indicator
Would I recommend the V6? Absolutely 100% yes. If you are in the market for a new hoover and are happy to hoover as you go rather than hoovering the whole house from top to bottom this is the one for you.
The Dyson V6 can be purchased from John Lewis for £242.99 here, which is the cheapest price that I have seen it advertised for.
