I am constantly drowning in laundry. My washing basket is ridiculously big, especially when you consider that there are just three of us, one of whom wears teeny tiny clothes. Yet, that ridiculously big washing basket is always overflowing. It’s pretty much always a high, never a low. The Summer months and the ability to dry the washing on the line see me coping a little better, but come the Winter when clothes take forever to dry, my washing basket goes bonkers. I’m pretty confident that the arrival of baby number two will see me finally giving in and purchasing a tumble dryer just so that I can attempt to keep on top of it all.
Today I am going to be chatting a little about my laundry gems, everyone knows that kids are messy. They go out of their way to find mess. They could be left in an empty, plain white room and still come away messy. And do you know what? I say let them be messy! Once I’ve gotten over the initial shock of seeing Aria coming in from the garden covered from head to toe in mud I’m happy. Happy that my daughter isn’t afraid to go exploring, that she enjoys discovering nature and exploring her surroundings. Dirt is good! Once I’ve gotten over the fact that she is covered from head to toe in in the spaghetti Bolognese that I lovingly cooked I’m happy. Happy that my daughter isn’t afraid to try different foods and grateful that she enjoys my cooking.
Obviously leaving my daughter to run wild and make mud pies results in a never ending battle with the washing basket. A battle that I’ve been pretty much loosing for the past three years. Over these years I have found a few laundry highs to help reduce the load a little :
Find a detergent that meets the needs of your family. We have recently discovered Persil Powergems and I’m wondering how I managed for so long without them. Aria’s clothes have pretty much always been left stained with our previous detergents, and while I’m aware that some stains are just that, stains, I have been left shocked at how many of those ‘stains’ disappeared after one wash with Persil Powergems. The revolutionary new gem format of Persil Powergems and its triple powers of stain removal, care and freshness will help to tackle the most stubborn stains.
The sunshine is your friend. If your detergent is failing to remove your stains, or you are left with some particularly stubborn stains, the sunshine really is your friend. Position any stained clothing onto your washing line in direct sunshine and leave it out all day. Very often the time the stain will miraculously disappear.
Routine is key. I don’t know about you guys but I am the least organised person and really do suck at routines. But, with Aria needing uniform five days a week and me living in black leggings, I’ve discovered that routine really is key. If I don’t stick to a routine we end up running out of clothes pretty swiftly. My aim now is to do washing at least every other day, rotating between lights and darks. This tends to leave me with a good supply of school dresses for Aria and black leggings for myself!
Rapid washes. Most washing machines come with an everyday or rapid wash cycle. When washing things such as towels that just need a freshen up be sure to use this feature, having your washing done and hanging up to dry within half hour really is a fab time saver and means you can quickly get the next load in!
Get the whole family to muck in. Simple things like everyone emptying their pockets and putting their dirty washing in the washing basket can make a big difference to the time it takes to sort the washing. Even at the age of three Aria knows to pop her dirty clothes in the basket, she doesn’t always do it, but she knows she should!
Wear clothes more than once. Remember that clothes don’t necessarily need to be washed after every use. On the rare occasion that Aria’s clothes are spotless and I haven’t spilled some form of food down my own clothes we will wear them again.
Shake the creases out before drying. Shaking the creases out and taking your time both when hanging clothes up to dry and taking them back off the line can massively cut down on ironing. And let’s face it, no one wants to waste time unnecessarily ironing.
What are your favourite #LaundryGems? Do you ever manage to win the washing battle?
